Nlyte gets real-time monitoring by integrating Intel DCM

Nlyte Software, a data center infrastructure management (DCIM) software vendor that has been focused mostly on the capacity-planning aspect of DCIM, has added real-time monitoring capability to its solution by integrating server middleware by Intel.

The middleware is Intel’s Data Center Manager (DCM). It aggregates power and temperature data from a variety of devices, including servers, network switches and electrical equipment, to feed it to a DCIM system. Nlyte has added a DCM Integrator module as an option available to its customers.

“They’re going to get a whole library of data center devices that can easily be integrated into the platform,” Doug Sabella, Nlyte president and CEO, said.

While Nlyte has a monitoring capability without the new module, it is not real-time. Sabella calls it “near-real-time monitoring.”

The company has not focused on monitoring because it views monitoring as something that should be done within network operations and the IT department, he explained. Nlyte’s aim is to integrate the data center into the customer’s business environment, building it into the IT fabric, as opposed to further building out separate facilities capability.

DCM instantly integrates the capacity-planning software with real-time power and thermal data feeds from Dell, HP, IBM, SGI and Supermicro, among others. It supports Cisco switches and some power distribution units from Schneider, ServerTech, Eaton, Emerson and Dell.

Schneider, Eaton, Dell and Emerson also have uninterruptible power supplies that support DCM.

Intel works continuously to expand its list of DCM-ready devices, but Nlyte also has its own library of devices it has been expanding.

Like it does with other modules, Nlyte charges for the DCM Integrator on a per-rack basis. Sabella declined to say what its price per rack was, explaining that it would vary depending on the scale of the data center.

The Nlyte partnership is a major win for Intel. Partnering with DCIM vendors is the most important go-to-market channel for DCM and Nlyte is one of the leaders in the space.

Other DCIM vendors that offer DCM include Cirba, FieldView Solutions, Itracs Corp., JouleX, Modius, Power Analytics Corp., Rackwise and Schneider Electric, among others.
