Fujitsu sets up Spanish HPC hub

Fujitsu has chosen Spain as its fifth hub for High Performance Computing (HPC) in Europe.

It said Spain is predicted to have about 5% of the market for supercomputing in EMEA.

It said much activity in the market in EMEA is triggered by a major global race amongst companies to have the most powerful supercomputers and most energy efficient IT environment.

Fujitsu’s program for supercomputing is based on what it calls the Human Centric Intelligent Society, which is hoping to encourage new initiatives in e-agriculture, e-healthcare, e-personal assistance and e-learning, among other areas.

In these efforts HPC is crucial for data mining, visualizing data and providing knowledge management.

Fujitsu is using a number of next-generation data center technologies as part of this, including power and cooling devices, and is also focussing on the Cloud and high-speed networking.

Fujitsu will be setting up HPC sales and support services in Spain as part of its Global Innovation Network.

It will join the Global HPC competence Center in Germany, the Fujitsu System Europe in France, where much software development takes place, and other laboratories in the UK and Italy.

Fujitsu’s work will build on innovations already carried out with the world’s fastest supercomputer, the K Computer installed at the Riken Advanced Institute for Computational Sciences HPC facility.

It has also developed PRIME HPC FX10, a massive scale machine that can provide speeds of up to 23 petaflops with high energy efficiency with consumption of just 1.4MW.
