Dell released a “technical preview” of its OpenStack-based private cloud, called Cloud Dedicated, at Dell World conference in Austin, Texas, Tuesday.

The company is a long-time member of the community developing the open-source cloud operating system, which spurred out of a collaborative project between hosting company Rackspace and the US National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA).

Dell offered interested companies a test drive of its OpenStack-based private cloud, called Cloud Dedicated. The company is shooting for big business, claiming its cloud platform has large-enterprise-grade security and compliance features.

Dell does not limit itself to open source when it comes to cloud infrastructure, however. It already offers Cloud Dedicated private-cloud infrastructure built on VMware. Dell said its cloud revenue for the third quarter of fiscal 2013 was up 30% year over year.

While it strives to offer any type of cloud a customer needs, Dell’s philosophy on OpenStack is the open-source platform will make it easier for companies to build hybrid cloud infrastructure, so they can move workloads between private and public clouds.

The company’s early foray into the OpenStack-cloud market came in May, when it announced a reference architecture for on-premise clouds hosted by Dell PowerEdge servers. It was available for the Ubuntu operating system in some regions of Europe and Asia.

Dell’s arch rival in the enterprise space HP has also built its cloud services on OpenStack. Other major competitors, such as Cisco, IBM and NetApp, are all involved in governance of the foundation overseeing the open-source platform’s development.
