Con Edison (ConEd), New York City’s electrical utility, began restoring power to Lower Manhattan and Brooklyn Wednesday evening. Many buildings remained without power, however, because of basement flooding and damage to electrical equipment.

Buildings that remained without power through Thursday afternoon included a data center operated by Datagram, an internet service provider.

As of 2pm local time on Thursday, Datagram’s data center was still down, but water from the flood had been almost completely pumped out, and its crew was awaiting delivery of a 2MW mobile generator it had ordered to power the facility until utility power comes back on.

The delivery was expected by 5pm, and the company had arranged nightly fuel deliveries. New switchgear and cable are already onsite to plug the building into the generator.

“We expect all services to be operating normally, however, we will not know the availability of telephone service in the area until we restore,” a status update from the operator read.

The Datagram data center was shut down on Monday night, when water flooded its basement, which contained a lot of the facility’s electrical infrastructure. The company switched it off to prevent a fire.

Meanwhile, another Manhattan data center operated by Atlantic Metro, at 121 Varick St., was also awaiting a mobile generator. The company expected the machine to arrive around 3pm local time, according to a morning status update online.

“Once the generator arrives on site there will still be several hours of electrical work that needs to be completed to tie the unit into the bus and inspect the UPS units and properly power up the site,” an Atlantic Metro rep wrote.

As of about 11am, the company expected to restore power to the facility by midnight.
