Tulip Telecom has officially opened Asia’s largest and the world’s third largest data center in Bengaluru – Tulip Data City.
The data center, which spans almost 1m sq ft (actual size 0.9m sq ft) can house 12,000 racks with 100MW of power.
The facility has been built to Tier IV and III standards by IBM and Indian Consultancy SCHNABEL, with IBM handling the design consultancy for data center operations including power, cooling, rack layout and chillers and SHNABEL offering peer review of the build upon completion.
Suppliers include Schneider Electric, Cisco, EMC, IBM, HP, Panduit and Corning.
Tulip wanted the build to have a keen focus on efficiency and it has already been labelled India’s greenest and most power efficient data center, with a PUE of about 1.5.
The data center is now being used for colocation and managed hosting services, including data storage and security.
Tulip purchased its property in Bangalore last year for Rs230 Crores and spent Rs900 Crores on the build.
Tulip is no stranger to data center builds. It has built data centers for the government of Goa and Uttaranchal.
The company first launched its managed services in 2007 with data center and video services for enterprises.
"We want to be the largest data services provider in the country,” Tulip IT Services Chairman and MD HS Bedi said at the time.
According to a report by Equity Bulls, Tulip has already received orders worth Rs600 Crore over five years for 30,000 sq ft of space in the data center. A report by Biztech said the company is looking to increase bookings by 25% by the end of 2012.
In its earnings results in November 2011, Tulip Telecom said it had increased its focus on the high margin data center services space and high bandwidth enterprise connectivity – a move which contributed to a rise it its EBITDA of 24.4% for the quarter to Rs203.2Crore.
It said it had received new orders from the banking and financial services sector, IT and government industries.
Tulip Telecom CEO Sanjay Jain said the company has seen: “High demand for our enterprise services continues across the connectivity, managed services and data center product portfolios. Even though lead times for decision making from organizations have increased, we have built a strong funnel across all product portfolios and have created a strong team of specialists to position Tulip as an able partner to our customers.”
