Digital Realty Trust (DRT) has broken ground on its 1440kW data center developments just outside Melbourne in the Australian state of Victoria.
DRT purchased 30,250 sq m for A$4.1m at Melbourne’s paramount Industrial Park in November last year for its two data center builds. It was just one purchase in Asia Pacific, including one in Sydney’s Erskin Park, where it is building out a 9,300 sq m facility at a cost of A$100m.
The first Melbourne facility, covering 5,000 sq m, is expected to be ready for business in 2013. It will support two 1440kW data center PODS (performance optimized data centers). The second will support four 440kW PODs.
DRT Regional Head for Asia Pacific Kris Kumar said he expects the Melbourne project to be worth an estimated A$365m to the local economy.
“In addition to direct economic impact . . . we believe there will be a ripple effect on regional businesses which will also benefit western Melbourne significantly,” Kumar said.
“There is also potential for training and skills development for employees in small to medium enterprises in the data center industry.”
Kumar said DRT already has its Australian staff in place and tenants are already committing to the facility.
The National Australian Bank has signed a long-term data center lease for DRT’s Turn-Key Datacentre solution, taking up 5,000 sq m of space.
