UK-based data center design company Sudlows has received a contract to replace an aging power plant for Leeds City Council’s primary data center.
The council is the second largest Metropolitan local authority in England and provides more than 500 services to more than 700,000 constituents.
It has been taking significant efforts in recent years to upgrade its IT services, from the desktop to the data center, with a new facility built at the Leeds Civic Hall.
It is currently using a legacy electrical infrastructure, and wants to upgrade to the latest Tier II specifications for greater data center redundancy.
The £500,000 project will come with its challenges, according to Sudlows critical power director Miles Allen, as the council wants to maintain full operational status throughout the upgrade which will be complete by Easter this year.
He said the council operates a mission critical environment where efficiency and resilience is key.
“With an increasing use by the local community for digital services, it is vital that any facility is carefully designed to meet not only this growing demand [for] digital access but that these services have a reliable as well as efficient power support,” Allen said.
Leeds City Council supports a number of community functions, including networks for schools users, data networks, the council’s mobile phones and more than 1,000 staff.
