NTT lowers PUE and expects big savings following DCIM implementation

Provider deploys Vigilent energy management systems at two data centers

NTT America has deployed an energy-management system at two large US data centers in two major markets, expecting the system to bring major energy-cost savings and realizing Power Usage Effectiveness (PUE) improvement.

Following a successful pilot implementation of Vigilent's energy management system at its data center in San Jose, California, NTT America has implemented the solution at full scale at the San Jose facility and at its Sterling, Virginia, data center – the provider's two largest US facilities.

Collectively, NTT expects the move to result in about US$630,000 in savings on energy costs per year, the company said Tuesday. Kazuhiro Gomi, president and CEO of NTT America, said the company's motivations in implementing the Vigilent solution went beyond its own cost savings.

“Equally important is our enterprise customers' interest in, and support of, energy efficiency both from the environmental and cost reduction avenues,” he said. “As a key driver for the future of the data center, NTT America will continue to evaluate, support and deploy technologies that can be environmentally sound and cost effective for our customers” The management system is deployed across 178 Dx and chilled-water Computer Room Air Conditioning (CRAC) units and more than 3,000 server racks. The infrastructure is installed on 135,000 sq ft of data center floor total.

PUE of the San Jose facility improved more than 5%, and the Sterling data center's PUE improved 10% following the system's implementation. NTT expects additional financial benefits beyond energy savings, including reduced maintenance costs, increased cooling capacity, better thermal management and deferred capital expenditures.
