Emerson unveils physical appliance for Trellis DCIM software

Management Gateway to process data collected by Trellis

6 December 2011 by Yevgeniy Sverdlik - DatacenterDynamics

Unit of the global data center equipment vendor Emerson Network Power that focuses on data center infrastructure management (DCIM) products announced today a physical appliance that will process data collected through the company’s DCIM software platform.

The Universal Management Gateway, an appliance by Avocent (Emerson’s DCIM arm), is integral to the company’s DCIM platform called Trellis, Emerson said. Combined with Trellis, the device will provide real-time IT and infrastructure monitoring and control capabilities.

Avocent president Steve Hassell said the appliance’s role will be key in the Trellis platform, leveraging Emerson’s hardware, software and services expertise to enable more efficient data center management.

"This device integrates capabilities delivered traditionally through multiple disparate IT and facilities devices into a single product that delivers dramatically enhanced functionality along with reduced space utilization," Hassell said.

Avocent expects the appliance to become available in February 2012.

While relatively small at the moment in terms of total revenue, the DCIM space is growing rapidly. Market research firm 451 Research announced today a report that sized the DCIM market at US$245m in 2010, but expected it to reach $1.3bn by 2015, growing at a compound annual rate of nearly 40% between now and then.

The analysts identified about 40 companies playing in the space. While most of them generated less than $10m each from DCIM sales in 2010, there were several whose DCIM revenue that year exceeded $25m, John Stanley, one of the report’s authors, said.

The amount of companies in the DCIM space is growing rapidly as well. This week alone, IO, the company that until recently was purely a data center services provider, launched its data center operating system IO OS as a stand-alone DCIM software product.
