The world’s leading guidebook publisher, travel media company Lonely Planet hit the news back in 2014 when they moved to Cloud with Amazon Web Services to support a wider range of products with the company’s move into digital to meet consumers’ needs. Since then, Lonely Planet has become a case-study as the model example of Cloud Migration. Spear-heading this project is Darragh Kennedy, Head of Cloud Services at Lonely Planet. DCD sat down with Kennedy to gain insights into what Lonely Planet has to offer in anticipation of his speaker session at DCD>Thailand 2017.

Darragh Kennedy will be speaking on February 17 2017 at DCD>Thailand, a “Case study: Lonely Planet’s journey to Cloud/SaaS” touching on the three stages of the journey, lessons learnt along the way and an overview of the strategic benefits of cloud to a business.

When asked to recall Lonely Planet’s journey into Cloud, Darragh commented, “We started the move quite early, back in 2012 and went all in on public cloud that was unusual for an established business at that stage. Since then, reliability has increased greatly, also the public cloud vendors have continued to innovate at a rapid speed providing numerous new services that we use. Looking forward, we are starting to use some of the serverless services, which make building products even faster”.

Thailand has stood out as a comparatively more matured IT marketplace offering significant reliability and cost-savings for enterprises in the Indochina region. With its growth spurt in the last few years and move into Cloud, Kennedy’s session comes at a key time where the market is ready to gain insights into Cloud adoption.

“DCD events are always good opportunities to network with the IT community. All the key players of each region are always present and so it’s like catching up with “family”. I’m also looking forward to sharing my thoughts and lessons learnt with the industry during my session. Thailand has a lot of potential to grow in the next few years so it’s definitely a good place to convene at”, Darragh added. Darragh will be one of 20 international speakers sharing their industry knowledge and best practices surrounding the latest technologies and innovations in Cloud Data Centers at DCD>Thailand 2017.
