The convergence of IT and facilities is happening at a rapid speed, with software being the ultimate word in the modern data center. Against this backdrop, DatacenterDynamics at CeBIT (14-18 March, Hannover) gathers experts from the global IT infrastructure community to map out how the digital economy is rapidly transforming the design, build and operation of the underlining infrastructure which it critically relies upon. And Open Source is at the front of this transformation.

The “Open” organisations such as the Open Compute Foundation, OpenPOWER, OpenIX and OpenStack will be represented at the event, providing case studies and debating the future of open-source powered IT infrastructures on the StackingIT stage. 

The open-source model will especially be crucial in the data center with the rise of microservices and containers, which took the industry by storm last year. In 2016 organisations will increasingly move away from big servers into small microservices around multiple servers or data centers.

The Lego effect

“Microservices will require “infrastructure” out of the box which can be constructed in a “lego based” approach. Infrastructure near capabilities like compute, storage, network as well as infrastructure related capabilities like load balancing and replication have to have a “plug and play” approach and the implementation should be invisible to the consuming microservice”, says Gunnar Menzel, Capgemini’s VP& Chief Architect and President of the Open Data Center Alliance, who will present more in-depth analysis of this concept at DCD at CeBIT in March.

These new and open approaches are set to transform data center network architectures, ensuring continuous, agile delivery of business services as we move into the software-defined era.
