The Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) was hit by a lengthy outage across the United States on Thursday.

The American Association of Motor Vehicle Administrators (AAMVA) said that it was still investigating the cause of the problem, but blamed it on cloud issues.

“From approximately 09:50 a.m. EDT and 12:30 p.m. EDT today, the network that connects motor vehicle agencies across the United States to each other and to various verification services experienced an outage due to a loss in cloud connectivity,” an AAMVA spokesperson said in a statement.

“During that time, there was no ability to process messages that support transactions of driver licenses and motor vehicle titles. This prevented a number of motor vehicle agencies from issuing driver licenses and vehicle titles during the outage.

“AAMVA is working internally and with our cloud providers to determine the root cause of the outage."

While services have resumed, the department now has a backlog that is expected to prolong wait times.

Amazon Web Services, Google Cloud, and Salesforce all boast the DMV as a customer, but none of them reported issues with their own services. DCD will update this story when we learn more about the cause of the outage.
