Telecity Group has opened its sixth data center in Amsterdam - AMS 6, just before the company merges with Equinix in the largest ever colocation acquisition.
The new 6,000 square meter (65,000 sq ft) facility will provide 9.6MW of new customer capacity in a key European location where demand is outstripping other European regions, with an efficient design giving a Power Usage Effectiveness (PUE) of 1.20 from day one, Telecity promises. Meanwhile Telecity’s acquisition by Equinix waits a European Union decision which is due on 13th November.
Groundwater cooling
Replacing less energy efficient chillers, Telecity is using free cooling systems which use Amsterdam’s groundwater for cooling Equinix’s Aquifer Thermal Energy Storage (ATES) takes advantage of Amsterdam’s groundwater, naturally stored in aquifers - underground layers of water-bearing permeable rock - for systems to cool the data center.
The new facility has plenty of connectivity, efficiently arranged with a reduction in the coupling points required, for faster carrier connectivity and better signal strength.
All of this makes the facility ‘future proof’, according to Alexandra Schless, vice president Western Europe and managing director Netherlands for Telecity: “Given its geographical position and favourable business conditions, Amsterdam is one of the world’s core hubs for international connectivity.
