Along with the recent flurry of investment in data center companies in the US, a lot of new data center construction is also taking place. Here is a round-up of this week's construction news:

Yahoo!'s Lockport expansion gets regulatory green light

Yahoo!'s plan to expand its data center campus in Lockport, New York, has taken another step forward Tuesday, after local planning officials approved the company's site plan for the second phase, The Buffalo News reported.

Paul Bonaro, head of the company's Lockport facility, told the news outlet he expected construction of the next phase to take about one year. Groundbreaking is scheduled around 1 December.

The data center campus is famous for being the first location where the internet company used its infamous Yahoo! Computing Coop data center design. Initially called Chicken Coop, the design maximizes the use of outside air for cooling to reduce its energy consumption.

Underground data center development gets anchor tenant

Data center colocation and IT solutions company LightEdge has signed on as anchor tenant for a future underground data center being built by Hunt Midwest Real Estate. This will be LightEdge's fourth data center location.

The tenant plans to bring the first phase of its 60,000 sq ft facility online in the first quarter of 2014. It will also use a portion of the six-acre equipment yard on the property's surface above ground.

Travelers gets government support for Nebraska build

Travelers Insurance signed a development agreement with local officials in Sarpy County, Nebraska, where it plans to build a US$200m data center, Omaha World-Herald reports.

The 190,000 sq ft development, codenamed Project Oasis, will take advantage of a $760,000 infrastructure investment by the county, including roads, water, electricity and sewer. It has also qualified for a new state tax break for investments of more than $200m.

T5 leases powered shells in North Carolina to financial-services firm

An unnamed financial-services firm and data center wholesaler T5 Data Centers have secured tax breaks for a project on T5's site in Kings Mountain, North Carolina. Local county officials approved a 10-year abatement of 65% of property tax on the facility, The Shelby Star reported.

The tenant has agreed to lease half of all powered building shelves on the campus for 10 years. The deal is for turn-key data center product, so T5 now has to fit the powered shells out to the tenant's specifications.
