Digital Realty Trust, one of the world’s largest data center and colocation providers, has announced a reshuffle in its management team. The San Francisco-based company announced that its CTO, Jim Smith, will now lead its Portfolio Operations Group.

Smith, who has been with Digital Realty since 2004, retains the CTO title but will now manage the unit that oversees the company’s global property and technical operations, customer service, security, and data center services.

Going places

Smith will take over for David Schirmacher, who currently serves as Digital Realty’s senior VP of Portfolio Operations. Schirmacher will then assume a new role as senior VP of Design & Construction, where he will manage data center infrastructure development. Schirmacker, who has been with the company since 2012, will continue overseeing development and implementation of EnVision, Digital Realty’s data center infrastructure management (DCIM) solution.

The change in roles will be effective March 1, 2015, according to a company statement.

The management restructure is minor compared to Digital Realty’s last C-suite shuffle. In March of last year, the firm’s CEO and co-founder, Michael Foust, stepped down as chief executive and was replaced by A. William Stein, Digital Realty’s CFO. Stein continues to serve in both roles.

“This organizational change is in keeping with our commitment to unlock the outstanding talent within Digital Realty as we focus on how to best utilize our resources to drive future growth,” Stein commented in a statement.

“Both Jim and David have established themselves as accomplished leaders within the company as well as the industry, and I believe that switching their roles will better leverage each of their key skills and experience, strengthen our overall operations….They have each made impressive progress within their respective divisions, and this move is a testament to their abilities and flexibility to lead two vital aspects of our business.”
