Climaveneta has just finished installing the cooling systems for a new Russian data center. The Yaroslavl Data Center has a Tier III reliability level as measured by the Uptime Institute classification. The facility is a large complex of buildings covering a total floor space of 323,000 sq ft over a total area of 7 hectares.

Construction began on the project in early 2012 and finished in December 2015. One of the largest in Russia, the data center has received an international Tier III compatibility certificate.

Russia’s data center market has been growing at around 25 percent annually fuelled by the cool climate and recent changes to the country’s data sovereignty law which now demands that all Russian citizens’ personal data has to be stored on Russian soil.

This latest data center complex, which provides cloud and colocation services, was built by Moscow-based RD Construction for the huge telecommunications company Beeline in Yaroslavl, near to Moscow.

New cooling system

The main building works thanks to a special free-cooling system. Wind blows onto the facades of the data center and then into the mixing chambers. Cold air reaches the main air duct, cools the internal circuits, flows on through the data center and is then released outside, keeping the server room cold with high efficiency.

Thanks to the relatively mild summers of Yaroslav, the free-cooling system is able to keep the server rooms at the right temperature for 8 months a year.

For the rest of the year, Clmaveneta has designed a secondary cooling system working whenever the external air is three to four degrees higher than the 24 degrees maximum.

The secondary cooling system is based on three Climaveneta FOCS-ME 9604 condenserless chillers.

These  automatically start working when the free-cooling system requires more to keep the DCP modules at the set temperature, so always keeping the data center at an optimal energy efficiency level.

“The [data sovereignty] law will be a growth driver. Certainly, we observe the growth of the data center market in Russia,” said Oleg Zhukov, Chief Executive of RD Construction, which specializes in the construction of data centers.
