Cannon Technologies has launched a transportable modular data center designed to withstand extreme temperatures and hostile desert, Arctic and marine conditions.

Despite its durability the Globe Trotter needs virtually no prior preparation and can instantly operate, the vendor claims. Cannon describes it as ‘suitable for all modes of transport’ so delivery into hostile terrain could be catered for. The vendor recently supplied infrastructure to Camp Bastion, the British base in Afghanistan.

The data center design has a range of high specification, containerised pre-fabricated 3m, 6m and 12m single modules. Double ‘clamshell’ variants of the model can be snapped together (clamshell style) to form a larger aggregate size.

The Globe Trotter range is fully container safety certificate (CSC) certified by the International Organization for Standardization (SIO) and meets the Institute of Transportation Engineers (ITE) brief. Soft Ride 19-inch shock absorption frames are designed to protect equipment in the racks. Wireless shock transmitters advise control centres of any seismic activity in earthquake affected regions.

A climate control system is configured via direct and indirect filtered free cooling with direct expansion (DX) technology that can deal with temperatures ranging from 58°C to minus 46°C. Quick fit external cooling modules mean the system can operate within an hour of offloading.

Globe Trotter has standard 19-inch cabinets and aisles, with each unit pre-fabricated with power, cabling, containment and cable management. Cannon will supply modules with pre-installed servers, switches, modular or fixed uninterruptible power supply (UPS) systems, LED lighting and power distribution units (PDUs) with N+1 redundancy. The power density of an installed system will usually be 4kW to 6kW per rack, with higher densities also available.

The units are available in 12 footprints from 80 to 900 square feet with 2 to 38 cabinets, each with up to 200kw.

A lot of work went into the resilient transportable modular data center, according to Matthew Goulding, MD of Cannon Technologies. “Thorough testing and state-of-the-art components offer unrivalled performance, scalability and functionality,” said Goulding.

Cannon Technologies won the Most Extreme Data Center Deployment Award at the DatacenterDynamics EMEA Awards 2013.
