A cut in a submarine cable could cause wide-scale disruption to Internet connections in the UAE and surrounding region, according to a report in The Gulf Today.

It said The Emirates Integrated Telecommunications Company said disruptions could be seen for "several days", but some providers in the region said they had not seen any connectivity issues.

It did not say how the cable was cut, but said the event occurred Wednesday.

It said it had taken immediate action and had rerouted traffic using other available links, but bandwidth could still be affected, hitting 30% of its users.

It said the cable operator was responsible for repair work.
