TeliaSonera International Carrier (TSIC) has moved into a New York data center managed by Telehouse. This is the seventh Telehouse facility chosen by the Swedish company, but the first one in the US.

"As a leading global wholesale provider with one of the world's most wide-ranging fiber backbones, TSIC is an excellent addition to our cutting-edge, carrier neutral data center facility that is Telehouse New York Chelsea," said Satoshi Adachi, vice president of Telehouse America.

TSIC has also announced it completed the acquisition of Ipeer, a Swedish cloud provider.

TeliaSonera is the dominant landline and mobile communications provider in Sweden and Norway. It also provides the Internet backbone in Europe and Asia. In 2013, TSIC became the first carrier to launch a 100G optical network across Europe, built in partnership with Nokia Siemens Networks (now reanamed as Nokia Solutions and Networks).

The majority of shares in TSIC are owned by the Swedish and Finnish governments.

Now, the company has expanded its operations in New York by moving into the Chelsea data center located at 85 10th Avenue. Built in 2011, this facility offers 60,000 sq ft of colocation space accessible 24/7, as well as a direct connection to NYIIX – the city’s largest and most active IP peering exchange, one of the global top 10.

Chelsea is the seventh Telehouse facility to house some of TeliaSonera’s services. The company already rents space in four data centers in London, two in Paris and one in Frankfurt.

Together with its parent company, KDDI and sister company Telehouse Europe, Telehouse America operates a network of 46 data centers, with 22 located in the US.

"TSIC has maintained a long-term presence in the New York metro market, which to this day remains a critical aspect of our North American network. The addition of several strategic regional PoPs as well as the Telehouse Chelsea data center provides our customers with greater reach and network diversity throughout the New York market, as well as across the nation and into Latin America," commented Ivo Pascucci, regional director for Americas at TeliaSonera.

On Wednesday, the carrier announced it had purchased Ipeer, a Swedish ISP and cloud provider previously owned by Applewise. TeliaSonera said the deal will enable it to deliver new types of services as Ipeer becomes part of Cygate – its own cloud infrastructure subsidiary.
