T-Systems has opened the door to its new data center in Biere, Germany.

The facility has a PUE (Power Usage Effectiveness) rating of 1.3 and has been awarded international LEED  (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) Gold Certification for its energy efficiency.

Deutsche Telekom, T-System's parent company, said both the certification and the launch of the data center represent an important milestone for its climate-protection target. The company aims to reduce its total CO2 emissions 20% group-wide by 2020.

T-Systems said this facility was built in response to a “steep increase” in demand for secure cloud services based in Germany.

Deutsche Telekom claims the Biere facility will be the largest cloud data center in Germany and one of the largest in Europe once all of the roll-out phases have been completed.

The site has floor space of 5,400 sq m and has the ability to house approximately 30,000 servers.

The current IT production area of the twin site can be expanded to almost 40,000 sq m.

Deutsche Telekom has fitted out an existing T-Systems' site in Magdeburg, close to its new facility in Biere, to make them almost identical so they can work as twins.

Deutsche Telekom’s CEO Tim Höttges said the company is investing in Germany as a center of IT business. “IT made in Germany is in demand,” Höttges said.
