Tim Bell, who manages infrastructure at the CERN physics lab was the star turn of Tuesday’s keynotes, showing how OpenStack is helping in the search for dark matter, the Universe’s missing anti-matter and the riddle of why gravity is weak.
CERN’s Large Hadron Collider experiments create 1Pbyte per second, in the form of images of particle collisions. CERN has stored a 100PB archive, and adds another 27PB per year.
New experiments will push that to 400PB per year by 2023, forcing CERN to expand from its Geneva data center (actually across the border in France) to one in Budapest, Hungary.
