Huawei and Telefónica said they will work together to deliver new enhancements to the UNICA infrastructure architecture, software-defined networking (SDN) and network functions virtualization (NFV) to provide technologies that will be the foundation for Telefónica’s network transformation.

Huawei said it also hopes Telefonica's deployment could become an “example” for the industry.

Huawei was speaking from Mobile World Congress in Barcelona where it also showcased its FusionSphere operating system which is at the core of Huawei’s cloud computing strategy.

It said FusionSphere has been deployed in more than 40 countries, providing a platform for both telecom and enterprise applications.

FusionSphere can implement high-performance distributed storage, SDN, and large-scale dynamic resource scheduling, significantly reducing operating expenses (OPEX) and the time needed to introduce new services, Huawei said.

Huawei said by using FusionSphere, telecom carriers can smoothly migrate their IT services and telecom services to the cloud and improve their core competitiveness by providing cloud-based services for their users.

Huawei’s rotating CEO Xu Zhijun said: “just like IP technologies did before, cloud computing is changing the landscape of telecom. We can see that the future network infrastructure will be data center-centric, software defined, virtualized, open cloud-based and ICT-converged. Cloud OS will play a key role in this network transformation.”
