Connectivity provider Hibernia Networks is using Ciena’s submarine optical systems for its transatlantic networking between major international hubs and data centers.

Hibernia offers more than 200 network Points of Presence (PoPs) in 89 markets and 25 countries.

It will use Ciena’s GeoMesh submarine systems to connect them, using Ciena’s 6500 packet-optical system, WaveLogic coherent optics and full ROADM, reconfigurable optical add-drop multiplexer.

These components will be the foundation for an OPÔü┐ network architecture that Hibernia says will enable it to expand rapidly in accordance with changing trans-Atlantic traffic patterns.

Ciena’s OneConnect intelligent control plane will be used for service creation and provision.

As a new member of Ciena’s BizConnect partner program, Hibernia is working with Ciena to jointly develop new sales opportunities, particularly with government, education and other public-sector customers.

Hibernia provides low-latency routes to 31 different financial exchanges around the globe through its Global Financial Network.

It also owns and operates a global network connecting North America, Europe and Asia. Customers include global investment banks, content delivery networks, broadcasters, cloud services, enterprises, international PTTs and ISPs.

Matt Johnson, SVP of product and strategy at Hibernia Networks, said customer connectivity needs are evolving as they seek support for their global web-scale approached to infrastructure virtualization.

Ed McCormack, the general manager of submarine systems at Ciena, said that submarine cable operators are turning to Ciena for flexible and programmable trans-oceanic GeoMesh networking capabilities.

“This scalable and intelligent network architecture will position Hibernia to generate new revenue streams by quickly and easily introducing new services,” McCormack said.
