Amsterdam-based colocation provider EvoSwitch has set up a Point of Presence in the Amsterdam Internet Exchange (AMS-IX) which will allow multiple 10GbE connections and a 100GbE backbone connection in time for the Olympics and Euro Cup.

AMS-IX first doubled its network capacity to 100GbE in October 2010, a move which secured its position as one of the largest Internet hubs in the world.

At the time, AMS-IX CTO Henk Steenman said: "The amount of traffic we have to deal with doubles every 18 months.”

EvoSwitch has been acting as an AMS-IX reseller partner since 2010. It said its work with the exchange will help it meet growing demand it sees from its customers who are increasingly using and distributing media-rich content and large amounts of data.

In particular, EvoSwitch is preparing for the 2012 Olympics which start in July and the Euro Cup basketball tournament, as well as growth in local demand, according to AMS-IX CEO Job Witteman.

“The greater Amsterdam region is growing fast an attracting more and more IP density,” Witteman said.

“It is an impressive step forward to both the region and the collocation market that EvoSwitch’s data center will roll out a 100GbE connection a full bases, including backbone.”

EvoSwitch’s 10,000 sq m data center in Amsterdam is connected to more than 35 carriers and is in close proximity to AMS-IX.
