Software-defined networking vendor Big Switch Networks has launched a technology and channel to bring hyperscale networking to a wider audience.

The Big Cloud Fabric, which is available now and will ship later this quarter, is described as the logical next stage for network designers who want to embrace hyperscale design.

The Big Cloud fabric uses the company’s Switch Light operating system on physical leaf and spine bare metal switch hardware and supports Trident II silicon from Broadcom.

It is designed for 10G and 40G scale and resiliency, featuring headless mode high availability, zero-touch provisioning and L2 and L3 forwarding options.

It can be managed via OpenStack, Cloudstack, command line interface (CLI) or graphical user interfaces (GUI).

The company is also releasing version 4.0 of its Big Tap monitoring system for the cloud.

In a bid to bring these products to a wider audience, it is also recruiting resellers and systems integrators who can sell to companies outside of its traditional high-end customer base.

Big Switch currently channels its sales into global corporations in sectors such as financial services, high tech, service provision, retail, government and higher education.

“The product is designed for new pods in existing data centers and has been in beta with ten customers to date as a part of private cloud, big data and virtual desktop projects,” a Big Switch spokesperson said.

A data center pod built with the Big Cloud Fabric features a modern application and tenant focused centric configuration.

The advantage of the system is that it created a substantial cut in the number of consoles needed for day-to-day management.

By integrating various workflows it can dovetail and harmonize the efforts of various technology teams involved in data center work, such as networking, security and audit staff.

This cuts both capital and operational expenditure in software defined data centers, according to Big Switch.

Working with new channel players will help Big Switch take hyperscale data center technologies to the broader networking market, according to Douglas Murray, CEO of Big Switch Networks.

"Private data center networks now have the flexibility to run on interchangeable bare-metal network switch hardware with SDN software," Murray said.
