In the month of March Belden updated its Hirschmann Eagle Tofino Industrial Security Solution to include “Security Profiles”, launched HiView, a tool that gives access to the graphical user interfaces (GUIs) of managed switches in its Hirschmann range and extended the product line to include field-attachable valve connectors from the GDM series.

For security it added  to its industrial control monitoring to create and securely distribute rule and protocol definitions to address newly disclosed vulnerabilities.
"Control system customers benefit from a single, easy to deploy package of tailored rules that can be installed without impacting operations. The result is that manufacturing facilities can defend themselves against new threats quickly and effectively. The discovery of the Stuxnet malware in 2010 alerted “the security researcher” community to how easy it is to cause damage to industrial systems. Designed with a focus on reliability and safety, rather than security, devices such as PLCs (programmable logic controllers) and DCS (distributed control systems) are often easy to exploit. In the year 2011 more Industrial Control System (ICS) vulnerabilities were made public (many with exploit code available on the Internet), than in the entire previous decade. Even more troubling, the publicly disclosed vulnerabilities are only a fraction of the conservatively estimated 100,000 or more vulnerabilities that exist in the field today," the company said.
Recently Schneider Electric utilized the EAGLE Tofino Security Profile feature to defend against publicly announced vulnerabilities in its Modicon PLC product line. By utilizing the EAGLE Tofino’s capabilities, they provided a method of defense for their customers that was immediately effective and that did not require any changes to automation equipment or network configurations.
Added features include Improved Event Logging, New VLAN Support and more protocol and product support.
“We have consistently heard from both vendors and customers how difficult it is to apply security updates to industrial networks with continuous production and many legacy devices” said Eric Byres, CTO and vice president of engineering at Tofino Security. “The EAGLE Tofino 1.7 product line solves a major difficulty, which is making it simple and safe to implement security updates into operating facilities”.
GUI

The HiView GUI allows views of the security certificates of products. With HiView, Belden is launching an interface that for the first time can be used to directly access the GUIs of the switches in its Hirschmann range. “We have invested a lot of time in developing a unique automation tool,” says Product Manager Mark Cooksley. “Many users prefer not to have a web browser installed on their computers for security reasons, but they still want to take advantage of the products’ intuitive and user-friendly graphical user interface.”

Connectors

On the connector front its type B connectors are available without circuitry or with more than 20 different electronic inserts that protect downstream circuitry against voltage surges or electromagnetic interference. Versions featuring built-in status indicators (with/without circuit protection) are also available. The valve connectors feature industrial protection class IP65/67 (optionally IP68) and can be used within a maximum temperature range of -55°C to +125°C. Other connector features include high shock and vibration resistance, and extensive resistance to chemicals and UV radiation. Easy-to-grip housings ensure that connectors can be rapidly assembled. Rounded edges make it difficult for dirt to accumulate and ensure that it can be easily removed.
Depending on the version, the rated voltage ranges from 12 to 250 VAC/VDC, and the rated current amounts to between 1 and 10 A with circuitry and 16 A without.
Cable diameters of between 4.5 and 10.0 mm with a cross-section of up to 1.5 mm2 can be used. Connectors can be assembled simply by tightening the accompanying central screw. No additional gasket is required. Integrated strain relief compliant with UL 2238 ensures secure connections.
