Axiom Fiber Networks recently announced its official launch of operations as a provider of telecom infrastructure services in the New York City metro area. The start-up, operating since late 2014, will initially provide dark fiber services to customers along its 20-mile, high-density network loop that encompasses Midtown, ending at the tip of lower Manhattan.

Construction on the firm’s network began in 2014 to connect Manhattan’s major carrier hotels, and Axiom will use this to offer customers faster high-density fiber connections to these telecom hubs. The 864-fiber strand count network will initially connect Intergate.Manhattan at 375 Pearl Street (owned by Sabey Data Centers), 325 Hudson Street (owned by Netrality Properties), The Hub at 32 Avenue of the Americas (owned by Rudin Management), 111 Eighth Avenue (owned by Google), and 60 Hudson Street (owned by  60 Hudson Owner LLC). The company anticipates this initial stage to finish during the first quarter of 2015.

Latest generation fiber

Axiom said its network will use the latest-generation SMF-28 fiber, and it expects subsequent stages of the network loop to be completed in the second quarter of 2015. When completed, the company stated, “Axiom’s core network [will] operate within striking distance of every building in Midtown and Lower Manhattan.”

The company aims to provide high-density and customizable networking solutions in a location that is one of the world’s most complex high-volume environments. It’s no surprise given the new firm is led by Felipe J. Alvarez, a telecommunications industry vet with experience deploying fiber networks in New York’s high-density urban setting. Leadership roles at Hibernia Networks and Con Edison saw Alvarez lead teams that developed and constructed large fiber networks, and Axiom’s CEO will look to translate this experience into building a similar infrastructure network on a smaller yet customizable – and perhaps more complex – scale.
