Chipmaker AMD has filed for a construction permit for a new data center in Suwanee, Georgia.

The facility will be part of the company’s data center consolidation project, whereby multiple data centers scattered around the US will potentially be consolidated into the large state-of-the art facility, AMD spokeswoman Pushpita Prasad said.

“It’s a 153,000-sq-ft facility and we’re going to build it in modules,” she explained. The first module’s step one in a 10-year-plan is slated for completion in the second quarter of 2012.

Prasad could not immediately specify size of the modules, but said the initial construction cost was estimated to be between US$25m and $30m. AMD is retrofitting an existing building shell to convert it into a data center.

An exact roadmap for future development beyond the first module has not been hashed out, as the company expects factors affecting the planning process in the future to be different from what they are today.

“What we are hoping for is that we’ll be able to leverage changes in technology and changes in the business environment, in terms of the cost,” Prasad said.
