The largest fiber-optic submarine cable in Africa has landed onshore in Yzerfontein, near Cape Town – the third cable of its type to connect Africa to the rest of the world.

The West African Cable System (WACS) will be housed in a cable station in the region now that Telkom has pulled it on shore.

Once complete the cable will link South Africa to the UK, running along the west coast of Africa.
It will also land in Namibia, Angola, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Republic of Congo, Cameroon, Nigeria, Togo, Ghana, Côte d’Ivoire, Cape Verde and the Canary Islands and Portugal.

In some locations it will be their first such international connections – the cable is designed to carry 5.12 Tbit/s.

A number of communications companies are behind the cable – Neotel, Telkom South Africa, Vodacom, MTN Group, Gateway Communications and Broadband Infraco have all been tasked with managing the project.

The cable project should be complete this year.
