Twitter’s data center strategy has become the subject of protests, after an unfavorable environmental report from Greenpeace.

On Wednesday (April 9) Greenpeace activists unveiled a new spoof logo for Twitter outside the company’s San Francisco headquarters.

The green life-sized parody version of Twitter’s famous bird icon is intended to draw attention to Twitter’s lack of commitment to renewable energy, according to Greenpeace.

Greenpeace said the parody Twitter logo is its way of urging the company to emulate Facebook and commit to 100% renewable energy.

Activists arrived outside Twitter’s San Francisco HQ wheeling a six-foot tall green egg. At 9am an activist in a greed bird costume, styled after Twitter’s logo sprung out and began protesting to staff as they entered the building.

Twitter was one of several corporations whose data centre strategy was criticized by Greenpeace in its “Clicking Clean” report, released last week. While Amazon Web Services answered its critics, Twitter has yet to make any comments.

Twitter was singled out for criticism for failing to make commitments to power its growing energy footprint with renewable energy.

“Companies like Twitter risk tying the new digital economy to old, polluting forms of energy that cause global warming if they do not shift toward renewable energy,” said Greenpeace in an official statement.

Rival social media giants Facebook and Google were praised for their green policies, with each being recognized for its 100% commitment to sourcing renewable energy.

Greenpeace also flew its thermal airship over the Bay Bridge and Silicon Valley areas with messages urging Twitter and other tech companies to follow the lead of Apple and other companies that it says are building a green internet.

Similar protests will be aimed at other companies identified in the report as being less than 100 per cent committed to renewable energy.
