Raritan launches an IP-based data center infrastructure management (DCIM) appliance called Smart Rack Controller, or EMX. The solution consolidates a variety of environmental and security functions into one set of controls.

It collects data center operations data from a variety of sensor types, including temperature, humidity, airflow, air pressure, smoke, water, and contact closure. It also pulls in data from cameras and from the vendor's recently launched asset-tracking solution.

According to Raritan, the solution helps operators ensure sound environmental conditions in the data center, locate specific pieces of IT gear and see live views of the facility. It also helps detect when a cabinet door is open, track people who enter the facility and be alerted of smoke or a security breach.

Herman Chan, director of Raritan's energy management business, said the company has been adding intelligence to data center racks for several years ago with introduction of intelligent power distribution units that measure energy usage of individual IT devices.

"We believe that smart racks are the best way to get accurate, real-time information on infrastructure performance, so that customers can develop more efficient ways to manage their data centers and reduce costs," he said.

The EMX appliance serves as a central connection point for Raritan's environmental sensors and USB-based devices. Users can view sensor readings on either the device's LCD display or through a Web-based browser.
