Internap is to add to its 'cloud' of data centers in the New York metro area with a behemoth planned for Secaucus, New Jersey that will almost double its capacity.

Once complete the data center will cover 100,000 sq ft in total with 55,000 sq ft of white space.

Phase one will be marketable by Q4 2013.

This will be Internap's third data center in the NY metro area - adding 45% to its capacity in the region - and its twelfth company-controlled facility in the US.

The Secaucus data center is within easy access of the bridges and tunnels into Manhattan, the New Jersey Turnpike, the Secaucus Junction train station and the New York metro area’s three international airports.

The eventual 100,000 square-foot facility will feature modular designs, new power and cooling technologies and power densities of up to 12 kW per cabinet.

These include a high-efficiency UPS system, a cooling system that maximizes outside air for free cooling, reclaimed building materials and operational best practices.

Customer amenities include fully-equipped office areas, technical workspaces, dedicated customer work environments and a full-service customer lounge.

“The Secaucus location is an ideal mix of space, power, connectivity options and access to a range of customers and industries,” Mike Higgins, senior vice president of data center services at Internap, said.

Internap has also announced that transport systems provider Vix Technology is using Internap’s managed hosting, colocation and route-optimized IP transit to process the 50 million fare transactions that it manages for its public transport clients.

The move sees Vix switch from internally hosted system in favour of Internap’s more flexible IT platform. Outsourcing gives Vix more options to concentrate on its core business and to create new services more rapidly, Higgins said.
