As part of its efforts to achieve carbon neutrality, Google has opened a new subsidiary called Google Energy - a company registered as a power utility in the State of Delaware, CNET reported Thursday.
The company has been pursuing a zero-emission status through many other ways, including increased energy efficiency of its data centers and investing into renewable energy projects among other approaches.
A Google representative told CNET the company did not have any \"concrete plans\" for Google Energy. \"We want the ability to buy and sell electricity in case it becomes part of our portfolio,\" Google's Niki Fenwick told CNET.
The ability to buy and sell electricity will enhance the company's ability to off-set its carbon emissions. Fenwick said currently the company does not have a way to buy \"affordable, utility-scale, renewable energy in our markets.\"
