Australian data center operator YourDC has officially launched its second facility, located in Edinburgh Parks, Adelaide.

The data center will eventually offer space for about 800 racks, with some of the power produced by a solar panel array on the roof.

According to Australian Financial Review, the site is secure enough to meet Department of Defence standards and local government agencies are likely be some if its first customers.

YourDC was established in 2015 to bring reliable, carrier-neutral colocation to the South of the country. The company launched its first data center in October 2015, located in Hawthorn, just six kilometers away from Adelaide’s central business district.

It then promptly started building the second, at a former Tenneco Walker car exhaust factory north of the city. The first phase of the $30 million project will deliver space for 200 racks. The facility also includes a 60-seat open-plan office area, kitchen and break room.

The Edinburgh Parks data center features dual feed mains power supply, plus onsite power generators. It also includes a 500kW solar power array, which is expected to grow to 1.5MW as the facility is populated.

Co-founder of YourDC Scott Hicks told AFR that the region is experiencing strong demand for colocation but lacks appropriate facilities - the only other major data center around Adelaide belongs to Adam Internet, and is about 90 percent occupied.

“We’re not picking up any plans from the major players to increase capacity here,” he added.

Hicks said that data centers in Sydney or Melbourne are not a great option for local businesses, since a round trip on the network could take as long as 32 milliseconds.
