Two employees of American outsourcing giant DST Systems have been charged with embezzling more than $388,000 while working on a data center project in Missouri.

Russell Fotovich of Kansas City and Thomas Ray Jones of Blue Springs were indicted by a federal grand jury for allegedly selling scrap metal from the site and using the money to pay for cars, motorcycles and other personal purchases.

That’s a lot of metal

According the indictment, Fotovich and Jones were working as facilities engineers at a DST data center in Winchester. Between 2011 and 2016, as the site went through major renovations, the pair was responsible for redeeming metal scrap from the site, including large quantities of valuable copper wire.

The two allegedly requested that the scrap dealer make checks payable to them personally rather than to DST, and then spent the proceeds on a series of outlandish purchases, including a 2010 Ford Mustang, a 2012 Harley Davidson and a 2017 Chevrolet truck.

Meanwhile, DST only saw 39 of 137 scrap redemption receipts.

The indictment states that neither Fotovich nor Jones paid any tax on the money they obtained; furthermore, they had the audacity to request a $5,000 wire-stripping machine from DST to speed up their scrap collection efforts.

The pair was charged in a 13-count indictment last week, including wire fraud, money laundering and filing false tax returns.
