Global data center provider Digital Realty Trust announced its second expansion in the Netherlands this week. This time, the expansion came with a built-in tenant.

The San Francisco-based data center landlord bought a partially-built building with some electrical infrastructure in Groningen (about 100 miles northeast of Amsterdam) from KPN, a major Dutch telco and ICT provider. Digital will finish turning the building into a data center and lease it back to KPN, according to a Digital Realty spokeswoman.

“Digital will fund additional cash to complete the construction of the data center,” she wrote in an email.

The 7,000 sq ft building has the potential capacity for 3.5MW of critical load.

The other expansion in the country Digital Realty announced this week was acquisition of a property in an Amsterdam suburb the company plans to build a data center on.

Michael Foust, CEO of Digital Realty, said, the rapid expansion in the Netherlands was a strategic move. “The Netherlands is a strategically important market for our European customers as they seek to implement robust data center solutions in order to facilitate business growth,” he said.

Bernard Geoghegan, Digital Realty's managing director in EMEA, added, “This deal continues our strategy of expanding our European footprint by investing in high-quality data center facilities that are home to top-tier global brands.”

Foust told FOCUS in March that the company considered Amsterdam and London to be the most active markets for IT services and digital content.
