Construction has begun at SuperNAP Thailand, a new data center in Thailand that is touted to be the first Uptime Institute rated Tier IV Gold data center in Asia. The entire project is expected to cost $300 million (11 billion Thai Baht) when completed in Q1 of 2017, and will have capacity for more than 6,000 server racks.

The data center is being developed in partnership with CPB Equity Kasikorn Bank, Siam Commercial Bank and True IDC. The latter is a significant data center operator in Thailand, and is part of the Ascend Group. As we reported earlier last year, the Board of Investment of Thailand (BOI) approved the investment of 6bn Baht by SuperNAP into the data center.

No flood danger

Covering an area of nearly 12 hectares, SuperNAP Thailand is being built in the Hemaraj Industrial Estate in Thailand’s eastern province of Chonburi. Located 110 meters above sea level, it is outside the flood zone and a mere 27 kilometers away from an international submarine cable landing station with links to both national and international telecoms and carriers.

SuperNAP Thailand will also be supported by two separate and newly-installed power sub-stations in order to provide additional redundancy and resilience to the facility, according to information furnished by the firm.

Until now, SuperNAP provider Switch has run data centers in the US, with its flagship in Las Vegas Nevada. It has recently begun expanding, with plans for data centers in Michigan, Italy and of course Thailand.

“The SuperNAP Thailand data center is a mirror of Switch SuperNAP US facilities, which are the first Tier IV Gold carrier-neutral colocation data centers on the planet,” said CEO of Supernap International Khaled Bichara in a statement. “This cutting-edge data center will meet the global demand for innovation in Asia Pacific.”

The Thai government plans to turn Thailand into a digital hub through the use of information technology (IT), and investments in new data centers and the cloud is expected to contribute to this vision. It is for this reason that SuperNAP Thailand is expected to generate benefits to country’s digital economy beyond its rated ability to stay up and running.

“SuperNAP is a thought leader in the technology behind data centers, and we are pleased to be a partner in the launch of SuperNAP Thailand,” said Ascend Group Chief Executive Officer Punnamas Vichitkulwongsa. “Our partnership will drive growth for digital Thailand. SuperNAP is an ideal solution for Thai companies that want to use data center and cloud as a competitive advantage.”
