São Paulo-based data center operator Ascenty has launched its first data center in Rio de Janeiro, offering capacity of up to 15MVA. The facility is equipped with a diesel generator power backup system and water cooling units.

The company recently extended its fiber network in Rio by 150km, bringing it to a total of 4,000km (2,485 miles).

Earlier this year, the company received $190m in debt refinancing from ING, Itaú BBA, and two unnamed international banking institutions. It said at the time that the funds would be spent on physical expansion in Latin America.

All of Ascenty’s data centers are at various stages of Uptime Institute’s Tier III certification, and the latest facility will be built to meet the same high standard.

The company’s CEO, Chris Torto, said: “Starting our operations at our Rio de Janeiro unit is another major step towards expanding our high-performance data center and telecom services.”

“Furthermore, it is part of the company’s plan to expand our business in Brazil and throughout Latin America over the next several years, as demand continues to increase for world-class infrastructure and telecom connectivity.”
