The 165 Halsey Street colocation facility in Newark, New Jersey has added an extra 33,000 sq ft of space, expanding into the eleventh floor of the building.

The 1.2 million sq ft data center required new capacity because of increased demand, the operator said.

Two of 165 Halsey Street’s five colocation rooms are 100 percent occupied, one is 75 percent full, and two – including the new Colocation Room V – are 50 percent full. The new colocation room has 130 cabinets available.

DC demand

165 Halsey Street is located 13 miles from Manhattan. It connects with more than 60 US and international network operators.

The facility will also provide direct current power to its customers for the first time, catering to demand from telecommunications companies. Customers that host their servers at the facility incur no monthly recurring cross-connect fees.

Joseph Simone, president at Tishman Real Estate Services operating on behalf of 165 Halsey Street, said: “Recently we’ve seen an uptick in demand for our colocation services and after considering a variety of options to meet that demand, decided to expand to the eleventh floor of our facility to create Colocation Room V.

“Colocation Room V is operational and our team is ready to take on new customers at any time.”

Expansion is also planned on the building’s ninth floor, Simone said in an interview with Telecom Ramblings in February.

Tishman Real Estate Services has been representing 165 Halsey Street in discussions with potential clients since the building’s redevelopment in the 1990s. It was previously a Macy’s department store and offers wide, open floors, high ceilings and 85,000 sq ft of roof space for generators and cooling equipment.

Current clients include telcos, Fortune 500 companies, financial institutions and content providers.
