Toyota Motor Corporation and electronics firm Panasonic are jointly developing a telematics system that links cars with home appliances.

Toyota and Panasonic said the collaboration will link both companies’ respective cloud data management systems, leading to a new service that links cars to home appliances via an application.

The service is designed to notify users if they have left appliances on when they leave and also suggests when to turn them on if they’re on their way home.

Panasonic currently has a smartphone app for its air conditioning systems which allows users to turn on and off air conditioning, set temperatures and check status.

Toyota and Panasonic’s joint telematics venture was agreed in June 2013 and has been in development for roughly a year but the companies’ have had a working relationship spanning around 60 years.

Toyota currently uses telematics in a number of its cars and links them with a cloud data center.

The service can suggest the best drive based on weather, road conditions, users driving preferences and a variety of other information.

It uses big data traffic information from the approximately 3,000,000 vehicles in Japan equipped with its telematics services to create traffic updates.

In the joint venture Panasonic will be responsible for the development of an app for automotive equipment and Toyota will primarily be providing support regarding app planning and connecting to the Cloud, including the addition of functions that enhance convenience for drivers.

Toyota said in the near future communication with cars will be an ongoing conversation.

“Like a concierge, your car anticipates and plans where you want to go, what you want to know and even what music you want to hear,” Toyota said.

The Toyota and Panasonic telematics service will be launched in Japan by the end of the year.
