South African data center operator Teraco has joined the International Data Centre Group (IDC-G), an international data center alliance. 

Teraco Data Environments is the largest provider in South Africa, currently working on a large expansion in Johannesburg. The IDC-G partnership brings together carrier-neutral data centers round the world, under a unified brand and with quality assurance, giving customers a single interface to providers with local experience in different markets.  

Global ambition

“I’m delighted to welcome Teraco to our growing partnership,” said Guy Willner, IDC-G chairman. ”Our assurance of quality is backed by strict membership criteria that include a commitment from data centre providers to obtain ISO quality accreditation. We are excited by the enormous potential of bringing together independent data centre operators as one global group.”

Willner previously founded carrier neutral data center provider IXEurope, which was bought by Equinix in 2007 for $555m. 

Teraco’s Johannesburg facility, near Oliver Tambo airport, will have 27,500 sq m of space, extending a site that has been in operation for seven years, and should be running by the end of 2016. The site will use free cooling to achieve high efficiency, and has access to 16MVA of power. 

Teraco’s existing customers include the Johannesburg Stock Exchange.
