Q9 Networks announced opening of a new phase of capacity at its largest suburban-Calgary data center site.

This is part of an ongoing expansion program by the data center provider. The company has so far invested about CA$425m in its data center network, more than $190m of which was spent on facilities in western Canada.

The new Calgary build is the third in a series of planned expansions at the suburban site. The second expansion was completed in 2012 and nearly all of its capacity has been sold to new and existing customers.

More than 40% of the new capacity has already been sold, Q9 said. The fourth expansion is already underway.

The site will accommodate more than 250,000 sq ft at full build-out. More than 100,000 sq ft is already operational.

All of Q9's Calgary data center facilities are interconnected with its data centers in British Columbia. Q9's existing facilities have sufficient on-site potential to support continued expansion in Calgary more than 15MW of critical customer capacity.

Q9 CEO Osama Arafat said the company has been operating in the Province of Alberta (which is where Calgary is) since 2002. "In that year, we opened our first facility and we've been building in Calgary ever since,” he said.
