British cloud and colocation provider Pulsant is investing £1 million to expand and upgrade its data center in South Yorkshire.

The facility will undergo a complete mechanical and electrical infrastructure refresh to help achieve concurrent maintainability – the main requirement for Tier III data centers. It will also add extra space to host another 90 racks, and prepare the campus for the arrival of the third data hall.

Work on the site will begin toward the end of June and is due for completion in October.

Pulsant was established in 2012 from the merger of several smaller, independent companies, some of which have been offering IT infrastructure services since 1995. Today, it operates 14 data centers across the UK, connected through its own fiber optic network and powered by 100 percent renewable energy.

The company runs Scotland’s largest private data center and is the only infrastructure provider to be awarded a royal warrant, making it the official supplier of hosted IT to the British monarchy.

Pulsant’s facility in South Yorkshire is one of its oldest, and the company decided that a refresh is well overdue. The upgrade will involve installation of a new switchboard, power generators, UPS units, cooling equipment, lighting and fire suppression systems.

It will also ensure that the campus has enough power capacity to support a third data hall, which will deliver enough space for 180 racks.

“This project will benefit both our existing customers in the data center, as well as prospects that are looking for a secure, resilient and high performing site in the South Yorkshire region,” said Brian O’Hare, head of Data Centre Construction at Pulsant. “Upon completion of the project, we will be one of the only facilities in the region to offer these levels of performance and reliability.”
