Malta-based telecommunications provider Melita has announced its new data center in Madliena is already running at almost full capacity, with the operator already planning an expansion due to strong market demand.
The Tier III-rated colocation data center, which opened less than two months ago, provides essential infrastructure to data-hungry companies in the financial services sector, i-gaming, IT companies and systems integrators among others.
It also exploits the infrastructure used by Melita in its role as an internet service provider (ISP) with its own international submarine data cable.
Melita said it is already planning a second phase for the data center due to its early success, which would offer “even more” space than what is currently available. The operator is also looking into the possibility of adding new services within the colocation framework to address specific requirements for companies operating in the i-gaming and financial services sectors.
Ludolf Rasterhoff, CCO of Melita, said financial services, system integrators and online gaming operators are increasingly finding Malta as a reliable and secure location from where to conduct their business, due to its “cutting-edge” data facilities.
Melita said it is committed to strengthening Malta’s telecommunications infrastructure and is creating optimum conditions for more foreign companies through investment in its network infrastructure.
The company added the investment in a new data center falls within the multimillion-euro investment programme that Melita is rolling out over a five-year period, amounting to an investment of €60m (US$82.61m) in technology and network upgrades.
The data center offers all the security and redundancy features that make a 24/7 operation possible. This includes security of the premises in terms of all-round perimeter fencing, access control to different areas of the building, fire prevention and suppression, power supply, the internal data network and data links to the outside world.
Rasterhoff said Melita has opted to offer managed cloud services through third party service specialists and system integrators, with a “healthy” number of these already present in Melita’s new data center.
