Data center operator Global Switch has launched the first stage of Sydney East, its tenth facility.

The new data center was built on Global Switch’s campus next to its existing Sydney West data center, adjacent to the Sydney Central Business District (CBD).

Once the last two stages of the AUD$300m development are complete, the campus will offer 67,000 sq m of data center space and provide 67 MW of utility power.

The new Sydney East facility is designed for high power density systems with a target annual rating for power usage effectiveness (PUE) of 1.35.

The Tier III+ facility incorporates a number of environmental design features, including free cooling, reconfigurable power and cooling distribution.

A green roof has been installed to provide thermal protection and to cut solar glare.

Global Switch is in the process of seeking an LEED (leadership in energy and environmental design) gold rating.

The Sydney East facility of the carrier neutral operator will have access to 50 network and cloud providers.

The campus now provides four entry points and six meeting rooms. Global Switch claims it is one of the best connected buildings in Australia and was recently chosen by Amazon for its latest Direct Connect solution.

Global Switch Sydney CEO John Corcoran said Global Switch is a core node not just for Sydney and Australia but a key hub for the Asia Pacific region.

Global Switch’s Singapore data center was recently connected via a subsea cable and the company has a new data center under construction in Hong Kong.

"The expansion of our Sydney campus was in response to a number of large national and multi-national companies wanting highly resilient and secure space for housing mission critical IT equipment,” Corcoran said.
