Expedient, a Baltimore, Maryland, data center services provider, has launched its second data center in its home region, located in Owings Mills.

The addition of the Owings Mills facility comes on the heels of last year’s expansion at the company's TidePoint Data Center in Baltimore. Expedient's total data center footprint is now 220,000 sq ft, the company said but did not specify how much of that footprint has been built out and brought online.

The new facility doubles the footprint for Expedient in the Baltimore market and will enable the company to offer both in-market geographic diversity and out-of-market, off-site hosting alternatives.

Curtis DePass, regional VP at Expedient, said some businesses wanted to host critical systems close to downtown for convenience and others wanted to be further away from the central business district. “This data center will be the ninth data center added to our network of seamlessly connected facilities, over a fully redundant, 10Gb Fiber network,” he said.

The company’s other data centers are located in Pittsburgh, Cleveland, Columbus, Boston and Indianapolis. The company is planning to add two more data centers within the next 12 months.

Shawn McGorry, the company's president and COO, said Expedient had a corporate sponsor who understood the significant capital commitment required to meet constantly increasing capacity and reliability demands of its customers. “We’ve conducted significant facility expansions in every one of our core markets at some point in the last three years,” he said.

The new Owings Mills facility is occupied by a large locally-based financial institution. It currently includes 9,000 sq ft of raised floor.
