Equinix has opened its fourth facility in Sydney, following hot on the heels of an expansion of its other Australian data center in Melbourne.

The $97 million (US) international business exchange (IBX) data center is 4km from Sydneys’s central business district, and already has some 20 customers, according to reports - including network provider Connectivity IT, broadband network Grex, managed hosting firm Servers Australia, and cloud provider Zettagrid.

When fully built out, SY4 will hold 3,000 cabinets and over 12,600 sq m (130,000 sq ft) of colocation space, which almost doubles what Equinix has available in Sydney.

The Australian market for colocation and hybrid cloud has been booming, prompting this new data center, and the expansion in Melbourne, said Jeremy Deutsch, managing director of Equinix Australia,

Equinix, as usual, emphasized the connectivity options within its IBX ecosystem, pointing out the Sydney campus offers interconnection more than 600 other businesses, 225 cloud providers and 135 networks.

The new building has 24x7 security, with more than 120 CCTV cameras, along with smart card and biometric access control. THe UPS, power and cooling systems have N+1 redundancy, and Equinix promises the new site can match its global uptime score of more than 99.99999 percent.

This opening brings Equinix’ total in the Asia Pacific region to 29 IBX data centers, in five countries and eight different cities. Worldwide the company has more than 146 data centers in 40 cities.
