After acquiring the building and land last October, DuPont Fabros Technology has started construction of its latest data center in a building that previously printed the Toronto Star newspaper.

Located in Vaughan in Ontario province, Canada, the 21,016 square meter (226,214 sq ft) ‘TOR 1’ will include 23 computer rooms and support critical power capacity of up to 46MW.

“When the Toronto Star opened its plant, businesses everywhere shared and stored information on paper,” Chris Eldredge, president and CEO, said.

“Since then, the world has gone digital and, as a result, businesses have experienced exponential increases in their need for world-class, outsourced data center services. Toronto is the hub of Canadian business and one of the largest markets in North America.

He continued: “That’s why DFT made the strategic decision to invest in TOR1 and the Greater Toronto market.”

The first phase of TOR1 will open in late 2017, featuring 12 data halls. Once at full capacity, DuPont expects annualized power usage effectiveness (PUE) of 1.25.

The facility is DuPont’s first outside of the United States, where it currently operates 11 data centers.
