Amazon Web Services has added four locations at colocation facilities around the world from where customers can connect to its cloud directly instead of connecting through the Internet.

The service is called Direct Connect, and on Tuesday Amazon announced the addition of Direct Connect locations at Equinix data centers in Singapore and Tokyo, CoreSite in Los Angeles and TelecityGroup in London.

This makes for a total of six Direct Connect locations. The service was previously available at Equinix data centers in Virginia and Silicon Valley.

The service enables customers to create a dedicated network between their offices, data centers or colocation facilities and an AWS region. The benefits of a direct connection over the internet are privacy, reduced network cost and a more consistent network experience, according to Amazon.

Customers that have equipment at one of the Direct Connect data centers can get direct 1Gbps or 10Gbps single-mode Ethernet cross-connect between their infrastructure and AWS equipment.

According to Equinix, the service lowers network cost into and out of AWS because it allows customers to reduce bandwidth commitments with ISPs. Amazon also offers discounts on Direct Connect data transfers.

Commenting on the selection of CoreSite’s Los Angeles data center as one of the new Direct Connect locations, AWS director of business development Terry Wise said customers in the Los Angeles area could now “take advantage of this service to easily expand or move existing applications to the cloud.”
