Russian data center specialist Cloud DC has opened a new facility in the Free Economic Zone of Zelenograd, an hour’s drive from Moscow.

The Cloud DC Moscow 1 was designed with a focus on cloud services and will not offer colocation. It will host 150 racks of high density equipment, with power draw of up to 22 kW per rack.

Zelenograd is one of four special ‘innovation zones’ established across Russia to serve as hubs for technology companies.

The latest data center in the area will offer Infrastructure-as-a-Service to its residents, and serve as incubation space for cloud-related start-ups.

The Cloud DC Moscow 1 offers three modular data halls hosting 50 racks each. Each rack will be filled with high density servers, since the management believes running cloud services on typical hardware will only loose them money.

The data center was certified by the Uptime Institute as designed to Tier III specifications, and the company is currently in the process of obtaining a similair certificate for its facilities.

Thanks to the cold climate, Moscow 1 will rely on free cooling all year long - but in the case of an extremely hot summer, it is able to turn on the adiabatic system. The facility is expected to have a PUE of 1.2.
